EUODIA: REVISIONING THE STORY OF CHAE EUNMI
DECEMBER 08, 2021 - FEBRUARY 05, 2022

From the inception of Waterfall Gallery, founder Kate Shin has dedicated her journey with living artists for them to flourish creatively, spiritually and economically. Shin’s belief as a Christian assures the true calling of artists as a messenger in faith seeking and sharing the truth of beauty in this world. Waterfall Gallery begins the Infaith exhibition focusing on selected personal stories to expose the construction of a person's faith and beliefs that have pushed forward the creation of their artistic practice.

Beginning with Euodia, a Greek word meaning “sweet fragrance” and “prosperous journey,” Waterfall Gallery showcases Chae Eunmi's constant dialogue with her faith transcending the unseen through art. Euodia exhibition will showcase the artist's earlier gold leaf paintings and installments that led to her years of mastering the application techniques using mother of pearl, gold and other permanent materials found in her contemporary works.

Chae acquired her masters at Graduate School of Tokyo Geidi (Tokyo University of the Arts). For Chae, light is extravagant, humorous, refractive, and considers eternity. As light comes in to fill and unite with the empty spaces in her works, the golden surfaces of the cubic forms continuously reflect unto one another to create an infinite amount of new spaces and images. These cubes repeat at a specific angle, capturing both the emptiness and profound presence at the same time. Her butterflies represent her prosperous path in faith beyond her brokenness. Just as the beautiful markings on mother of pearl are the result of the arduous process it endures to take its form, it is representative of how painful experiences and hardships of humans are a part of what makes us so beautiful and who we are. We hope this exhibition encourages one’s faith and unlocks the aroma of eternal beauty beyond the unseen.

“In the beginning, butterflies were capable of flying as their wings were all torn up and made of various different fragments. One day, a golden seed was planted in the heart of a butterfly who wanted so dearly to fly. The seed began to sprout leaves, flowers and fruits. The flowers began to cover and mend the butterfly’s wings until the butterfly was resurrected and finally able to fly towards its dreams with the aroma of beauty, love and blessings to the world.” -Chae Eunmi
