A Solo Exhibition by Antonio Murado

November 1st - January 6th, 2024

Waterfall invites you to journey through a survey of the major landscapes created by Antonio Murado within the past 20 years, as we present his most recent body of work that introduces figurative painting.

Antonio Murado (b. 1964) is a New York-based painter from Lugo, Spain, whose work delves into the nuances of time’s passage and the unhurried process of making art. His paintings yield romantic interpretations of nature, intertwined with historical references and literary inspirations. For Murado, the important thing is that it excites; that there is something abstract that moves. As a result, the work does not speak of its techniques as something instrumental, but rather an affirmation of the operational process through materials, their behavior, and the history of painting.

By meticulously layering the canvas and infusing it with delicate, expressive strokes, Antonio Murado achieves profound depth and a meditative ambiance. He explores his fascination with nature through subject matter, often abstract landscapes, animals, and flowers while experimenting with the inherent properties of paints and varnishes. Murado reduces his paintings to their fundamental elements, such as shape, color, and overall structure, inviting the viewer to embark on a more profound experience.

These landscapes serve as a repository of shared places, preserving the narrative of life on Earth and our marks upon it. The animals depicted carry symbolic significance, alluding to sacrificial offerings, while the figures within his works become wanderers who traverse and become one with the entirety of existence.

Murado employs the landscape as a visual medium to illustrate the unfolding of life. Instead of striving for a replica of nature, he prioritizes its essence, offering a conduit for contemplation of the profound meaning of existence. As a result, his artistic expressions conjure a sense of tranquility, longing, and a feeling of serene stillness.

For this series of works, Antonio invites viewers to discover the “inner light” by experiencing the highest form of love through natural essences and our own unfolding.
